STRESS IN PUPILS [ 6 - 10 YEARS ]

Stress in primary school age children:

Education without stress means: It is conscious, deliberate and positive purposive
influence exerted by the society on the growing child to enable him to be culturally refined ,emotionally stable ,ethically sound ,mentally alert ,physically strong , socially efficient and spiritually upright .
In this age children show interest in peer activities .Gregarious instinct is ripened in this stage .They are susceptible to the influence of their fellows .They seek the company the company of peer group to share their thoughts and feelings ,experiences and plays with them .They are inspired by group consciousness.
Sympathy, helpfulness and co-operation towards the members of one’s own group are common attitudes .The severest punishment that give stress to them is exclusion from the gang .Social approval and disproval determines its conduct .It develops a very strong sentiment to the group .Friends take important place after parents at this age .

Education at this age is hard to handle at the beginning of grade one.2 to 3 languages and three more subjects include developing them in all grounds. Teachers hardly use proper teaching aids to make the child learn the subject. At this age child has so much to learn and understand which could be acquired by demonstration and activity. Stress is caused to the child as he fails to understand the basic concept of the lesson taught. A teacher when trained will not be allowed to demonstrate in internship programmed with at least five teaching aids. Very few schools follow the rule to show the teaching aids to all the respective lessons where the child could learn with out stress. Colorful charts ,flannel boards ,class room demonstrations ,activities ,experiments ,models [natural and man-made] ,black board ,and above all ideal teacher would help the child to develop enthusiasm to learn about new things .When the child is asked to by heart the lessons he undergoes stress as he wants to learn the application of it in his real life which is more important .One should enjoy learning to avoid stress in his life. Teaching is an Art .

We learn -
10%    of what we read
20%    of what we hear
30%    when we see
50%    when we see and hear
70%    when we discuss
80%   when we experience personally and
95%   when we teach to someone else.

Stress In Pre-School Children [2 to 4 years old]

Stress is commonly found these days in every individual at higher levels irrespective of their age. Parent’s interest to make their children capable to meet today’s requirement at intellectual
Level in order to face this competitive world is responsible for stress even at this age. Children are encouraged and facilitated in all respects by parents and school management to learn alphabets,
Rhymes, songs, sentences and stories .Names of colours, fruits, vegetables, birds, animals are planned sequentially one after another in respective months in many private schools. Children are instructed to follow constant repetition of above mentioned themes, recitation and oration. Children have to listen to their narration irrespective of their willing and interest. Five out of ten children or ten out of twenty-five children lack interest to learn at same time.Tenderhands that can hardly hold any small soft toy for period of time are taught to hold slatepencil, pencil, crayon to colour, draw lines    (to join dots to learn either slanting or sleeping lines) in given time period makes children to undergo stress in order to complete their work. Home works are given to home where mothers strive hard to make the child complete it and unfortunately do the rest helplessly by their own. Many intellectual games are planned to make the child play for their physical, mental and social development but with in short period of time at school also causes stress in children. Oral recitations in a group may not always provide happiness and liberty to the child. Every child has his/her own interest. Disciplined periodical teaching with constant repetition with actions and dance, to complete their respective portion makes the child helpless and restless. This in turn causes frustration and he cries aloud with stress in his mind.
Philosophers like John Comenius, Friedrich Froebel, and Maria Montessori gave deep thought to the personality of the child. Maria Montessori impressed upon the parents and teachers to give freedom to the child and to be humble with children. According to her there should not be any forced efforts in their incentives of development of child for learning which causes stress in their mind instead regarding education at home and school elders should promote regular good habits with love, play at their own interest, personal hygiene and to provide nutritional food to the child for all round development of the child without stress.

PARENTS STRESS

" If you raise your children to feel that they can accomplish any goal or task they decide upon, you will have succeeded as a parent and you will have given your children the greatest of all blessings."
 Brian Tracy ~

Human mind is the richest resource, which has no frontiers. Education broadly intends to prepare the child for life which is the most valuable thing. Everything has its own functional value. But everywhere the thinking man is weaving superficial values crossing the real values. In the global values, culture shocks and flood of information, the quality of life is on the decline. Quality life does not mean having rich material possessions but leading a healthy and happy life. Each family these days has fewer children than before. All of us, parents and teachers, want our children to be better off than us.

Academic studies have become the focus of life for a child .Parents feel that their child should perform well; get good grades to ensure a brilliant future. All other matters are of secondary importance. Parents and teachers put pressure on the child when the child fails to perform well. Parents blame the teachers for the poor grades of their wards. The child is at the receiving end from both sides, and starts showing behavioral problems. Matters seem to go downhill on all fronts. Research has revealed that children of different groups though same at their age do not learn at the same place or by the same method. Some are quick on the uptake but bad at reproducing on paper. Some seem to learn fast, and forget equally quickly .Others seem to have a mental block that prevents them from learning. Unfortunately our education system tries to equalize all of them. This results in some children getting behind, much to the anguish of parents and the irritation of teachers. This is where the stress begins.......

" If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the mystery of the world we live in."Rachel Carson ~

STRESS

In times of great stress or adversity, it's always best to keep busy,
to plow your anger and your energy into something positive.
Lee Iacocca

Continuous study over a long period of time is not suitable to
memorize material. If pupils parents continuously goad him that
he must be the first in class, or get more than 90%and if he does
not have the necessary intellectual capacity or clarity of the subjects,
though the poor child honestly strives to satisfy his parents desire, the
child may develop psychological symptoms as a face-saving technique,
on one hand he does not want to let down his parents and on the other
hand he does not want to accept his limited ability. So, he resorts to
'fight into disease’fever or headache or other physical ailment may
develop which is good excuse for his own failure.

According to Dr .G. Aruna Mohan in her book Psychological foundations
of education, early introduction of learning components without Child's
maturity is very harmful. Stress cause tensions. They are caused by
conflicts owing to excessive demands made upon the pupil who
he/she is not able to meet .It develops confusion, frustration and
self-distrust. Physical exercise like games, dance, social.emotional
and moral classes and time given to these activities is completely
neglected.
Curricular activities if carried on with suitable techniques of involvement of
students give good scope for the total comprehension of the spirit and
value of the subjects. These in turn develop deep root interests in
subjects.

Being in control of your life and having realistic expectations about your
day-to-day challenges are the keys to stress management, which is
perhaps the most important ingredient to living a happy, healthy and
rewarding life.
