STRESS RELIEF WITH EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

McCown et al: "Experiencing one's self in a conscious manner--that is, gaining self-knowledge--is an integral part of learning."
--From Self-Science: The Emotional Intelligence Curriculum

Emotional intelligence is the ability to deal with one’s as well as others emotions .The key domains of emotional intelligence are-

Knowing one’s emotions: self-awareness: The ability to recognize a feeling as it happens and not put it off is the keystone to emotional intelligence .It is important to be able to say `I am feeling jealous ‘even though it may be uncomfortable to admit it .The ability to monitor feeling from moment to moment is a crucial psychological insight for self-understanding.

Managing emotions:  If we have accepted what we are feeling, even the uncomfortable emotion can be handled ably, learning to sooth our self when things seem difficult and not rattling feelings of distress constantly .Example is the ability to manage with anger by not scolding or beating the other.

Motivating oneself: Emotions motivate us and dis-empower us if they are too strong and we allow them to overwhelm us .To motivate positively, feelings of enthusiasm, zeal and confidence are necessary. For example, if one wants to get what he wants in life he has to develop emotional control which requires delaying gratification or stifling impulsiveness .People who can be so tend to be more highly productive and effective in what ever task they undertake .

Recognizing emotions of others –empathy: As one begins to recognize emotions in oneself and realize her own emotion, she will be able to sense them in others more accurately . Emphatic people are more attuned to the subtle social signals.

Handling relationships : The art of relationships is skill in managing others emotions .Understanding of other peoples emotions give us the ability to motivate them .On having these skills people can do well at any thing that relies on interacting smoothly with others .

Negative emotions: These are the emotions which are the barriers of emotional intelligence .They create stress in every person irrespective of their age.
Negative emotions are caused when a person is exposed to face the unwanted situations in the society by force .It makes the man to turn away from his natural interests and abilities .Fear ,anger, grief ,jealousy ,envy makes their life ridiculous
Proper counseling and administration of work to develop ones individuality can only make the individual to relieve from stress causing negative emotions in order to gain emotional intelligence.

The Importance of Emotional Intelligence
  • John Gottman: "In the last decade or so, science has discovered a tremendous amount about the role emotions play in our lives. Researchers have found that even more than IQ, your emotional awareness and abilities to handle feelings will determine your success and happiness in all walks of life, including family relationships."
